The Inspiration Behind Rewriting Us

Rewriting Us holds a deeply personal place in my heart.

Hunter and Ember’s story grew out of something I recognize all too well—the quiet ways a relationship can begin to strain. Not through one defining moment, but through stress, pride, missed conversations, and the slow build of emotional distance. And just as real is the choice that follows: whether to keep pulling away… or to turn back toward each other and fight for what still exists.

As a mother of three very different children, including one on the spectrum, I connect deeply with Ember’s experience. I understand the invisible weight she carries—the constant balancing act, the resilience it takes to keep everything moving, and the quiet moments where that strength feels like it might give way.

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion in that. And also a kind of love that doesn’t get talked about enough.

I also know that real life doesn’t always give us resolution. We don’t always hear the apologies we need. Healing doesn’t always come in a clean or satisfying way.

That’s part of why I write fiction.

Through stories like this one, I can explore what it looks like to choose love not just as a feeling, but as an action—to rebuild trust, to sit in the discomfort, and to stay when it would be easier not to.

My hope is always to balance honesty with possibility. To tell the truth about how hard things can be… while still offering an ending that feels earned, and maybe even a little hopeful.
