King of Her Heart

There are some people you leave behind because you have to.
And then there are the ones who somehow keep finding their way back to you.
I’m so excited to introduce King of Her Heart, the first book in my brand-new Her Heart Series. This story took me somewhere new as a writer because it is my first and only military/veteran romance, but at its heart, this book isn’t really about the military. It’s about coming home changed, facing the person you hurt most, and discovering that the past doesn’t always stay buried just because you tried to leave it there.
Four years ago, Clara Leigh Davis walked away from the King brothers and swore she was done with both of them. Now she goes by Leigh. She has pink hair, an engineering degree, career opportunities opening in front of her, and a future she has worked hard to make her own. She is not the girl she used to be, and she has no intention of becoming her again.
Then Luke King comes home.
Except Luke isn’t the boy she remembers either.
He is older. Quieter. Scarred. A veteran carrying memories he doesn’t know how to explain and wounds that aren’t all visible. The teenage boy who once had too much to say has become a man who keeps almost everything locked inside.
But Leigh has a shoebox hidden under her bed.
Inside are twenty-nine letters Luke sent her during the years they were apart.
She read every one.
She answered none of them.
That became one of my favorite parts of writing this story, because Leigh is trying to understand two versions of the same man: the guarded Luke standing in front of her now, and the Luke inside those letters—the one who wrote down his regrets, his memories, his grief, his hopes, and the feelings he could never seem to say out loud.
And Leigh has to decide what to do with all of it.
What I love about second-chance romance is that it can’t really be about going backward. Luke and Leigh cannot return to who they were after her graduation, and I didn’t want them to. Too much has happened. They have both changed, both been hurt, and both built lives without each other.
So this story became less about whether they can fall in love again and more about whether they can learn to love the people they have become.
For Leigh, that choice is especially complicated. Luke isn’t the only thing pulling at her. She has a career beginning, opportunities that could take her away from Texas, a family she loves, and an independence she fought hard to build. I never wanted her happy ending to require giving any of that up. And I never wanted Luke’s healing to depend on Leigh somehow loving him hard enough to fix him.
Their relationship has to become something better than that—something built on trust instead of possession, honesty instead of assumption, and choice instead of obligation.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it is a little bridge tied to Leigh’s past, her memories, and eventually Luke again. I won’t tell you what happens there, because some moments deserve to be discovered on the page, but that bridge became one of my favorite parts of the entire story.
King of Her Heart has first love, second chances, old letters, family fractures, hard-earned trust, deep emotion, plenty of chemistry, and two people learning that forgiveness doesn’t erase the past—it gives you the chance to build something different from it.
If you love romances where the characters have real history, where the feelings run deep, and where the happily-ever-after matters because getting there was anything but easy, I hope you’ll give Luke and Leigh a chance.
King of Her Heart, Book One in the Her Heart Series, is available now on Amazon.
I can’t wait for you to meet them.
