I’ve always loved instant connections.

The kind that arrive before you’re ready for them. The kind that make you feel like you’ve known someone far longer than you actually have. The kind that settle deep in your chest and make you think, Oh. There you are.

I’ve been lucky enough to have those connections in my own life. I had one with my husband. I had one with my best friend. Because of that, I’ve always been fascinated by the power of recognizing someone almost immediately—not because everything is perfect, but because something in you responds to something in them.

It can feel like meeting the other half of your heart.

That idea was the spark behind Unexpected Magic. I wanted to write about an instant connection that feels real, powerful, and impossible to ignore. But I also wanted to explore what happens when that connection isn’t built on complete honesty.

Missy Nelson moves into a new apartment in Plano hoping for a fresh start, a little independence, and maybe a relationship that finally feels like it fits. What she doesn’t expect is Josh Anderson.

Josh is the exhausted, magnetic paramedic across the hall. He notices details. He listens when Missy talks. He makes ordinary moments—grocery shopping, hallway conversations, quiet nights in—feel charged with possibility.

Missy can’t explain the pull she feels toward Josh, especially when his warmth highlights everything missing from the relationship she’s already in. Josh sees her in ways she didn’t realize she needed to be seen.

But Josh has his own burdens. He is kind, capable, protective, and deeply devoted to the people who depend on him. Between long paramedic shifts, traumatic calls, and his responsibility to his brother James, Josh has convinced himself love is one more thing he might not be able to handle.

Then Missy slips past every defense he has. Not through dramatic declarations, but through small, intimate things. Shared grief. Playful banter. Late-night honesty. Quiet domestic moments that feel far too natural for two people who have only just met.

At the heart of Unexpected Magic is a slow-burn friendship tangled with attraction, longing, and one dangerous misunderstanding.

Josh knows he should correct that misunderstanding. But he is afraid—of losing her, of the weight of his own life, of Missy seeing the whole truth and walking away before he ever gets the chance to matter to her. So he lets the lie stand too long.

And that is where the heart of the story lives for me. Not just in the chemistry, though Missy and Josh have plenty of that. Not just in the tenderness, the longing, or the almost-moments.

It lives in the question of trust. Because Missy doesn’t just want to be wanted. She wants to be known. Cherished. Loved honestly enough for that love to survive the truth.

As her museum career begins to bloom, Missy has to decide what kind of life she wants. She is not simply choosing between two men. She is choosing between being tolerated and being treasured. Between loneliness dressed up as stability and the terrifying possibility of a love that might actually be real.

Josh, meanwhile, has to learn that regret is not the same as repair. Loving Missy means more than wanting her. It means telling the truth. Showing up. Offering honesty even when it might cost him the person he is trying so hard not to lose.

Unexpected Magic is a romantic, emotional story about accidental closeness, chosen family, second chances, and the frightening beauty of being truly known.
