The Inspiration Behind Growing Into Us

When I wrote the first book in the Maple Ridge series, I always knew I wanted to come back to Mark. He’s a complicated character—not a villain, just someone who made choices he didn’t fully understand at the time. And to me, those are often the most interesting stories to tell.
I wanted to explore what redemption could look like for him, and whether growth, when it’s real and hard-earned, can actually lead to something lasting. I’m also drawn to storylines that feel a little unconventional—ones that make you pause and wonder, could this ever really work? That question is what pulled me into Lily and Mark’s story.
Growing Into Us begins with Lily stepping into a new chapter of her life, focused on her career and determined to stay in control of her future. But an unexpected reconnection—with someone she never should have fallen for—challenges that sense of certainty, and what starts as something simple quickly becomes much more complicated… and much harder to walk away from.
Their relationship doesn’t unfold easily or cleanly—it’s shaped by timing, history, and the weight of choices that can’t be undone. And as the lines between right and wrong begin to blur, they’re forced to confront a question neither of them is prepared to answer: what do you do when the person you want most is the one you’re not supposed to choose?
More than anything, this book is about growth—messy, uncomfortable, and deeply personal. It’s about learning when to hold on, when to walk away, and what it means to choose someone fully and openly, even when it comes at a cost.
Lily and Mark don’t get there quickly, and they don’t get there without mistakes. But that journey—of becoming the people they need to be, both individually and together—is what defines their story.
